meditation & mindful movement
A 6 WEEK BEGINNERS COURSE
When: 20 Sept - 25 Oct 2022, every Tuesday 7.30 - 8.30 pm for 6 weeks
Where: The Serenity Barn, 4 Bascote Rd, Southam CV47 2EZ
About: this course will take place at The Serenity Barn, a beautiful yoga & pilates studio set in the heart of the peaceful Warwickshire countryside. Aimed at those new to meditation, I will be helping to establish a meditation practice that is flexible and accessible to the busiest of people. Whether you have one minute or 1 hour, taking time out to be present through a regular meditation practice has vast and well researched benefits for our mental and physical health and wellbeing.
From a personal perspective, as well as enjoying the more obvious benefits of a happier and calmer life where I feel empowered and more resilient to life's ups and downs, I have clearer skin, am experiencing a smooth peri-menopause, increased concentration, heightened creativity, faster recovery after exercise and weight loss amongst other things. I will be explaining the science behind these outcomes and sharing evidence based research as to why these transformations occur.
Many people believe they can't meditate because their minds are too busy but this is a huge misconception. With the right preparation, approach and techniques, meditation should be an 'effortless effort' and benefits often accrue after weeks not years. There are many types of meditation that I have explored over the years that stem from different cultures and traditions, but the most beneficial practice for me has been mindfulness (open awareness) meditation which has been proven to particularly support creative or divergent thinking.
Structure: we will begin each session with a graceful somatic practice that combines the warrior elements of yoga, with movements from qigong/tai chi and other forms of martial movement. After a short guided mediation incorporating poetry readings we will then focus on slowly developing an independent seated meditation practice (there are many ways to sit. You absolutely don't need to sit cross legged or in lotus position on the floor) that we will keep extending a little more each week. At the end of the session I will give a short talk on the history, philosophy and practicalities of meditation and share some handouts to refer to for a home practice. There will be opportunity to ask questions over tea and biscuits after the session.
Outcome: By the end of the course you will have learned a number of mindful movement sequences, and how to safely and effectively experience micro-meditations from as short as 30 seconds, to longer meditations of 1 hour + (and everything in-between). Though the use of apps and guided meditations are also invaluable and have their place, the real magic happens when you do it yourself...
